A.         Definition

Acts 1:8 (NASB) but you shall receive ”power” when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. "

Usage of the term “power” in the New Testament

Eph. 1:19  And what [is] the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

Matthew 26:64  Jesus said unto him, you have said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall you see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

E.          Mark

Mark 5:30  And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

Mark 6:2  And when the Sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing [him] were astonished, saying, From whence has this [man] these things? and what wisdom [is] this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?

Mark 6:5  And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed [them].

Mark 6:14  And king Herod heard [of him]; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him.

Mark 9:1  And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

Mark 9:39  But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

Mark 12:24  And Jesus answering said unto them, Do you not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?

Mark 13:25  And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. 26  And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

Mark 14:62  And Jesus said, I am: and you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

F.          Luke

Luke 1:17  And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Luke 1:35  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God.

Luke 4:14  And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

Luke 4:36  And they were all amazed, and spoke among themselves, saying, What a word [is] this! for with authority and power he comanded the unclean spirits, and they come out.

Luke 5:17  And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was [present] to heal them.

Luke 6:19  And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed [them] all.

Luke 8:46  And Jesus said, Somebody has touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.

Luke 9:1  Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

Luke 10:13  Woe unto you, Chorazin! woe unto you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

Romans 1:4  And declared [to be] the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

Romans 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Romans 1:20  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Romans 8:38  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Romans 9:17  For the scripture said unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.

Romans 15:13  Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

H.         First Corinthians

1 Cor. 1:18  For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

1 Cor. 1:24  But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

1 Cor. 2:4  And my speech and my preaching [was] not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:  5  That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

1 Cor. 4:19  But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power.   20  For the kingdom of God [is] not in word, but in power.

1 Cor. 5:4  In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1 Cor. 6:14  And God has both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.

I.           Second Corinthians

P.         Hebrews

Heb. 1:3  Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Heb. 2:4  God also bearing [them] witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Heb. 6:5  And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

Heb. 7:16  Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

Heb. 11:11  Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

Heb. 11:34  Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

S.         Revelation

Rev. 1:16  And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: and his countenance [was] as the sun shines in his strength.

Rev. 3:8  I know your works: behold, I have set before you an open door, and no man can shut it: for you have a little strength, and have kept my word, and have not denied my name.

Rev. 4:11  You art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for you have created all things, and for your pleasure they are and were created.

Rev. 12:10  And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Rev. 13:2  And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

The Path to Godliness Leads through the Valley of Suffering

1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13  but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.
