The
Body of Christ Ministering to One-Another
God has given a set of commands in
Scripture that deal with the body relationship between
believers. These commands from God instruct all
believers to be actively involved in ministering to one
another. It is only as the body ministers to itself
that there can be a truly healthy body, functioning as
God has designed.
The following is a brief summary of the
one another commands God has given to believers. The
question is how can the global body accomplish these
commands on a truly global scale. How can believers,
local churches, and educational institutions minister to
one another on a global scale?
The accomplishment of these commands must
be given the highest priority by the entire body. All
believers must make both a personal and a corporate
commitment to fulfilling God’s imperatives, anything
less is to allow for division and schism in the body.
Admonish One Another -- Rom. 15:14
Romans 15:14 Now I myself am confident
concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of
goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to
admonish one another.
"admonish" #3560 [nouqetevw],
The term is a compound of #3563 [nouV]--mind
and #5087 [tivqhmi]--to
put. It has the idea of; to admonish, or instruct, to
put in mind, to caution, reprove, warn. It stresses the
things that are wrong and call for warning, based on
instruction

and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Care
For Another -- 1 Cor. 12:25
1Cor. 12:25 that there should be no

the same care for one another.

This word is sometimes used in a different context where
it means to be anxious, care for; [mevrimna].
It is probably connected with [merivzw],

signifies that which causes this, a care, especially an
anxious care.
Comfort One Another -- 1 Thess. 4:18; 1 Thess. 5:11
1 Thess. 4:18 Therefore comfort one
another with these words.
1 Thess. 5:11 Therefore comfort each
other and edify one another, just as you also are
doing.
"comfort" #3870 [parakalevw
] This English word and the English word
“exhort” both come from the same Greek word. It has the
connotation; to call to one's side, either an
exhortation, or consolation. It is a compound word for
and combination of [para]--beside
and [kalevw]--to
call.
While the terms have been divided in this
paper, it can be assumed that one cannot be done with
the other. Comforting must be a part of exhorting, and
exhorting is a necessary ingredient of comforting.
Have
Compassion One of Another -- 1 Pet. 3:8
1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all [of] [you] [be]
of one mind, having compassion for one another;

James 5:16 Confess [your] trespasses
to one another, and pray for one another, that you
may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a
righteous man avails much.
"confess" 1843 [)exomologevw]
This word is an intensive form of [o&mologevw]
which has the idea of; to speak the same thing; to

or confession. It is a compound word made up of [ek]--out
and [omoV]--same
and [levgw]--to
speak. It carries the idea of speaking out the same
thing as another, or to be in agreement with another.
“faults” #3900 [paravptwma]
That which we are to “confess” are our faults. This
term is translated as trespass 9 times, offence 7 times,
sin 3 times, fall 2 times, and fault 2times. It means
to fall beside or near something and is used of a lapse
or deviation from truth and uprightness.
Consider One Another -- Heb. 10:24
Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one
another in order to stir up love and good works,
"consider" #2657 [katanoevw]
The Greek term is a compound of [kata]--intensive
and [noevw]--to
think about. It has the idea of; to perceive clearly,
to understand fully, or consider closely. It is used to
describe the action of having a clear understanding of a
person which comes from considering them attentively, or
fixing one's eyes or mind upon upon them in an intense
manner. This is inidcitive of a deep relationship
between two people.
Edify
One Another -- Rom. 14:19; 1 Thess. 5:11
1 Thess. 5:11 Therefore comfort each
other and edify one another, just as you also are
doing.
"edify" #3618 [oikodomevw]
This word is one of the more significant terms used in
Scripture to describe the responsibility of believers to
one another. It is a compound word from [oikoV]--a
home and [devmw]--to
build. It has the thought of to build. It takes on a
more personal aspect in its compound form as it implies
the building of a home.
Romans 14:19 Therefore let us pursue the
things [which] [make] for peace and the things by which
one may edify another.
Eph. 4:16 from whom the whole body,
joined and knit together by what every joint supplies,
according to the effective working by which every part
does its share, causes growth of the body for the
edifying of itself in love.
Is used metaphorically, in the sense of
edifying, promoting the spiritual growth and development
of character of believers, by teaching or by example,
suggesting such spiritual progress as the result of
patient labor.
Exhort
One Another -- Heb. 3:13; 10:25

daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be
hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Hebrews 10:25 not forsaking the
assembling of ourselves together, as [is] the manner of
some, but exhorting [one] [another], and so much
the more as you see the Day approaching.
NOTE! Same word as Comfort
"comfort" #3870 [parakalevw]
This English word and the English word “exhort” both
come from the same Greek word. It has the connotation;
to call to one's side, either an exhortation, or
consolation. It is a compound word for and combination
of [para]--beside
and [kalevw]--to
call.
While the terms have been divided in this
paper, it can be assumed that one cannot be done with
the other. Comforting must be a part of exhorting, and
exhorting is a necessary ingredient of comforting.
Forbear One Another -- Eph. 4:2; Col. 3:13
Eph. 4:2 with all lowliness and
gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one
another in love,
Col. 3:13 bearing with one another,
and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint
against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also
[must] [do]
"forbear" #430 [)anevcomai]
This is a compound word from [ana]--up
and [ecw]--to
have or hold. It has the obvious meaning of holding
up. It is normally used in the middle voice in the N.T.,
signifying to bear with, endure.
It is important to note that in Eph. 4:2
the exhortation to bearing with one another is to
be done in love. This is not the action of simply
putting up with someone while we grit our teeth and bear
it. It is to be done out of a love for God and the
other person.
Forgive One Another -- Eph. 4:32; Col. 3:13
Eph. 4:32 And be kind to one another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God
in Christ forgave you.
Col. 3:13 bearing with one another, and
forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint
against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also
[must] [do].
"forgive" #5483 [carivzomai]
The English word “forgive” has taken on a variety of
meanings over the years, but this Greek term emphasizes
the idea: to bestow a favor unconditionally. It is used
of the act of forgiveness, whether divine or human. The
pattern for this forgiveness is seen in God’s action in
Christ as He forgave us.
Use
Hospitality One to Another -- 1 Pet. 4:9
1 Pet. 4:9 [Be] hospitable to one
another without grumbling.
"hospitality" #5382 [filovxeno"]
The English thought of being hospitable is close to this
Greek word with the additional factor that the Greek
term includes the idea of a love not only for family but
also for strangers. It is a compound word derived from
[fivloV]--love
and [xevnoV]--a
stranger. It appears in 1 Tim. 3:2 as a requirement for
the office of a bishop and also in Rom. 12:13 in a noun
form [filoxeniva].
1 Tim. 3:2 A bishop then must be
blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate,
sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to
teach;
Romans 12:13 distributing to the needs
of the saints, given to hospitality.
Be
Kind One to Another -- Eph. 4:32
Eph. 4:32 And be kind to one another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in
Christ forgave you.
Gal. 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness,
"kind" #5543 [crhstovV]
This word portrays the idea of fit, or fit for use. It
also carries the idea of being mild, pleasant (as opp.
to harsh, hard sharp, bitter). When it is used of
things: more pleasant, and of people, kind, benevolent.
This action of one believer to another covers their
entire relationship and sets the standard for acting and
reacting between two individuals.
Kindly
Affectioned One to Another -- Rom. 12:10
Romans 12:10 [Be] kindly affectionate
to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving
preference to one another;
"kindly affectioned" #5387 [filovstorgoV]
This is a compound word which comes from [fivloV]--
friendly, love + [storgh]--natural
affection, love of kindred. It was used chiefly of the
reciprocal tenderness of parents and children ,
especially of parents for children and children for
parents. The obvious implication of this term is that
of the family relationship which should exist between
believers. Christians, as members of the family of God,
should have a familial love for all believers.
"brotherly love" #5360 [filadelfiva]
The love which should exist between believers is
amplified by the addition of this term. It is a
compound word derived from [filevw]--to
love and [adevlfoV]--a
brother. We are to love one another as brothers.
Love
One Another -- John 13:34-35; John 15:12, 17; Rom. 13:8
1 Thess. 3:12; 1 Pet.
1:22; 1 John 3:11, 23; 4:7, 11, 12; 2 John 1:5
Romans 13:8 Owe no one anything except
to love one another, for he who loves another has
fulfilled the law.
"love" #25 [)agapavw]
This Greek word probably carries more meaning for
believers that most any other word found in the New
Testament. It simply means to love, and it is used in
nearly every case in the N.T. to speak of God's
relationship with man. God’s love for us is the model
for our love to one another. There can be no greater
love that this type of love.
Members One of Another -- Rom. 12:3-5; Eph. 4:25
Romans 12:3-5 For I say, through the
grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to
think [of] [himself] more highly than he ought to think,
but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a
measure of faith. 4 For as we have many members in one
body, but all the members do not have the same function,
5 so we, [being] many, are one body in Christ, and
individually members of one another.
Eph. 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying,
"Let each one [of] [you] speak truth with his neighbor,"
for we are members of one another.
"members" #3196 [mevloV]
The theme of being a part of the same family is carried
also by this Greek word. It mean a limb, or a member of
the body. Scripture uses this term to describe the
relationship between members of Christ. The emphasis on
the interrelatedness found in these terms forms the
basis for the commands concerning the “one anothers”
found in the Bible.
Minister One to Another -- 1 Pet. 4:10
1 Pet. 4:10 As each one has received a
gift, minister it to one another, as good
stewards of the manifold grace of God.
"minister" #1247 [diakonevw]
This term is used in Scripture to describe the action of
being a servant, or attendant and serving and wait upon
another. The emphasis in this passage is that the gifts
we have from God are given for the purpose of “serving”
the body, not for self aggrandizement. The noun form is
translated as "use the office of a deacon" 1 Tim. 3:10,
13 in a more specific sense.
1 Tim. 3:10 But let these also first be
tested; then let them serve as deacons, being
[found] blameless.
1 Tim. 3:13 For those who have served
well as deacons obtain for themselves a good
standing and great boldness in the faith which is in
Christ Jesus.

another, just as Christ also received us, to the
glory of God.
"receive" #4355 [proslambavnw]
The word means to receive, or accept. It denotes to
take or receive into one's home, with the collateral

as Christ also received us.”
Restore One Another -- Gal. 6:1
Gal. 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken
in any trespass, you who [are] spiritual restore such
a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering
yourself lest you also be tempted.
"restore" #2675 [katartivzw]
This term was used in the medical world to describe the
action of setting broken bones and in the fishing
industry to describe the mending of nets. It is used in
this passage metaphorically, of the restoration of a
“broken” believer by those who are spiritual. Members
of the body are responsible to “restore” those who are
dislocated members of the spiritual body.
Be of
the Same Mind One Toward Another -- Rom. 12:16

called to liberty; only do not [use] liberty as an
opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one
another.
"serve" #1398 [douleuvw]
This word was used in the context of serving as a
slave. When it is used in a good sense it means to to
yield obedience. This commitment of “serving” one
another is an integral part of “denying” oneself for the
sake of Christ.
"liberty" #1657 [eleuqeriva],
A combination of the noun and verb form of free.
Stresses the completeness of the act, the aorist tense
indicating both its momentary and comprehensive
character; it was done once for all.
The phraseology is that of manumission
(release) from slavery, which among the Greeks was
effected by a legal transaction, according to which the
manumitted slave was purchased by a god; as the slave
could not provide the money, the master paid it into the
temple treasury in the presence of the slave, a document
being drawn up containing the words "for freedom." No
one could enslave him again, as he was the property of
the god.
Be
Subject One to Another -- 1 Pet. 5:5
1 Pet. 5:5 Likewise you younger people,
submit yourselves to [your] elders. Yes, all of [you]
be submissive to one another, and be clothed with
humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace
to the humble."
"submit" #5293 [upotavssw]
This term along with the previous ones describe the
relationship which should exist between believers as
they relate to one another. The emphasis of this word
is to retire or withdraw. It was primarily a military
term which meant to rank under. It comes from [upo]
--under and [tavssw]--
to arrange. Believers are not to be attempting to
surpass one another in glory, but to attempt to be the
best model of Christ as one desires not to be served,
but to serve.
Submit
One to Another -- Eph. 5:21
Eph. 5:21 submitting to one another

admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to
the Lord.
"teach" #1321 [didavskw]
This was a commonly used term to describe the action of
giving instruction or teaching. It is interesting that
in the modern church very few believers feel that they
are responsible or capable of carrying out this command.
However, the admonition is still relevant!
Be
Tenderhearted One to Another -- Eph. 4:32
Eph. 4:32 And be kind to one another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in
Christ forgave you.
"tenderhearted" #2155 [eusplagcoV]
This is a compound word made up of [eu]--well
+ [splavgcnon]
heart. It portrays the idea of being compassionate and
full of good heartedness. This is again a very broad
term that encompasses the entirety of a believer’s life.
The following are
negative commands concerning what a believer might do to
another believer. It should fill our hearts with great
sadness to see the specific commands God has given His
body concerning their perosnal and corporate
relationships.
Do Not
Be Consumed One of Another -- Gal. 5:15
Gal. 5:15 But if you bite and devour one
another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!
The context of this admonition is three
terms taken together for a sequence
"bite...devour...consume", the first two describing a
process, the last the complete destruction, or
swallowing of the victim. The first two describe the
action of biting and consuming food. The third gives
the consequence of such actions when used in a
metaphorical sense. Believers who are “biting” and
“devouring” one another are in danger of being consumed
by one another. This is a description of an assembly
which has given itself over to an ungodly attitude and
Satan has been given free reign.
"bite" #1143 [davknw],

Judge One Another -- Rom. 14:13

judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this,
not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in [our]
brother's way.
"judge" #2919 [krivnw]
This is a judicial term which primarily denotes to
separate or select, hence, to determine, and pronounce
judgment. The idea is that of judging the motives and
attitudes of others rather than the outward
manifestation of the inner man. Since no man knows the
heart of another, believers can not therefore cannot
make a judgment concerning it.
Do Not
Lie One to Another -- Col. 3:9
Col. 3:9 Do not lie to one another,
since you have put off the old man with his deeds,
"lie" #5574 [yeuvdomai]
This word simply means to deceive by lies. Believers
are to be honest in their relationships with others.
Deception is never a valid option.
Not
Preferring One Before Another -- 1 Tim. 5:21
1 Tim. 5:21 I charge [you] before God
and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you
observe these things without prejudice, doing
nothing with partiality.
"preferring" #4299 [provkrima]
This is a compound word formed from [pro]
-- before and [krivma]
-- judgment. It has the idea of an opinion formed
before the facts are known, a prejudice. It is a sad
thing to see racial or any other form of prejudice in
the church, especially if it is attempting to operate
under the guise of some falsely called spiritual
notion. Prejudice is sin!
Do Not
Provoke One Another -- Gal. 5:26
Gal. 5:26 Let us not become conceited,
provoking one another, envying one another.
"provoke" #4292 [prokalevomai]
This term comes from [pro]
- before and [kalevw]
- to call. It carries the connotation of to call forth

have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollo's for
your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond
what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on
behalf of one against the other.
"puffed up" #5448 [fusiovw]
The picture this term denotes is comical. It is
describing a believer who is “puffed up” like a
balloon. It comes from (from [fusa],
bellows). and describes to puff up or to inflate. It is
used metaphorically in the N.T., in the sense of being
puffed up with pride.
Do Not
Speak Evil One of Another -- Jas. 4:11
James 4:11 Do not speak evil of one
another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother

judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a
doer of the law but a judge.
"speak evil" #2635 [katalalevw]
This is a compound word which comes from [kata]--
against + [lalevw]--to
