"Biblical View of the
Poor"
It is not a sin
to be poor, nor is it a sin to be rich, but it
is a sin to have more than we need and not share
it with those who have less than they need.
God has given many guidelines concerning
the relationship and responsibility of the body
towards those who are lacking in material
resources. The sharing of these physical
resources, while a command of God and of great
importance, must not supercede the greater value
that all believers have to share in spiritual
resources. Only a part of the body has an
abundance of material goods and is able to share
in a greater way in this way, yet, all the body
has the ability to share in the spiritual.
Rom.
12:13
(NKJV) distributing to the needs of the saints,
given to hospitality.
Rom.
15:25-28
(NKJV) But now I am going to Jerusalem to
minister to the saints. 26 For it pleased those
from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain
contribution for the poor among the saints who
are in Jerusalem. 27 It pleased them indeed, and
they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have
been partakers of their spiritual things, their
duty is also to minister to them in material
things. 28 Therefore, when I have performed this
and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go
by way of you to Spain.
2 Cor.
8:1-15
(NKJV) Moreover,
brethren, we make known to you the grace of God
bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: 2 that in
a great trial of affliction the abundance of
their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the
riches of their liberality. 3 For I bear witness
that according to [their] ability, yes, and
beyond [their] ability, [they] [were] freely
willing, 4 imploring us with much urgency that
we would receive the gift and the fellowship of
the ministering to the saints. 5 And not [only]
as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves
to the Lord, and [then] to us by the will of
God. 6 So we urged Titus, that as he had begun,
so he would also complete this grace in you as
well. 7 But as you abound in everything--in
faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all
diligence, and in your love for us--[see] that
you abound in this grace also. 8 I speak not by
commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of
your love by the diligence of others. 9 For you
know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that
though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became
poor, that you through His poverty might become
rich. 10 And in this I give advice: It is to
your advantage not only to be doing what you
began and were desiring to do a year ago; 11 but
now you also must complete the doing [of] [it];
that as [there] [was] a readiness to desire
[it], so [there] also [may] [be] a completion
out of what [you] have. 12 For if there is first
a willing mind, [it] [is] accepted according to
what one has, [and] not according to what he
does not have. 13 For [I] [do] not [mean] that
others should be eased and you burdened; 14 but
by an equality, [that] now at this time your
abundance [may] [supply] their lack, that their
abundance also may supply your lack--that there
may be equality. 15 As it is written, "He who
[gathered] much had nothing left over, and he
who [gathered] little had no lack."
2
Cor 9:5-7
(NKJV) Therefore I thought it necessary to
exhort the brethren to go to you ahead of time,
and prepare your generous gift beforehand, which
[you] [had] previously promised, that it may be
ready as [a] [matter] [of] generosity and not as
a grudging obligation. 6 But this [I] [say]: He
who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and
he who sows bountifully will also reap
bountifully. 7 [So] [let] each one [give] as he
purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of
necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Cor
9:9-14
(NKJV) As it is written: He has dispersed
abroad, He has given to the poor; His
righteousness endures forever." 10 Now may He
who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for
food, supply and multiply the seed you have
[sown] and increase the fruits of your
righteousness, 11 while [you] [are] enriched in
everything for all liberality, which causes
thanksgiving through us to God. 12 For the
administration of this service not only supplies
the needs of the saints, but also is abounding
through many thanksgivings to God, 13 while,
through the proof of this ministry, they glorify
God for the obedience of your confession to the
gospel of Christ, and for [your] liberal sharing
with them and all [men], 14 and by their prayer
for you, who long for you because of the
exceeding grace of God in you.
Gal.
2:9-10
(NKJV) and when James, Cephas, and John, who
seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that
had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas
the right hand of fellowship, that we [should]
[go] to the Gentiles and they to the
circumcised. 10 [They] [desired] only that we
should remember the poor, the very thing which I
also was eager to do.
Eph.
4:28
(NKJV) 28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but
rather let him labor, working with [his] hands
what is good, that he may have something to give
him who has need.
Heb.
13:15-16
(NKJV) Therefore by Him let us continually offer
the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the
fruit of [our] lips, giving thanks to His name.
16 But do not forget to do good and to share,
for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
James
2:14-17
(NKJV) What [does] [it] profit, my brethren, if
someone says he has faith but does not have
works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or
sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16
and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace,
be warmed and filled," but you do not give them
the things which are needed for the body, what
[does] [it] profit? 17 Thus also faith by
itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

John 3:16-19
(NKJV) By this we know love, because He laid
down His life for us. And we also ought to lay
down [our] lives for the brethren. 17 But
whoever has this world's goods, and sees his
brother in need, and shuts up his heart from
him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18
My little children, let us not love in word or
in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by
this we know that we are of the truth, and shall
assure our hearts before Him. |
